Welcome to the Club!

Welcome to the Star Heights Book Club! If you love books, you are welcome to join! Invite your neighbors, friends, family... anyone who wants to come is invited. And if you don't love books but you still want to come, you're invited (we'll just make you bring the refreshments... just kidding)!

So, this is how it's going to work... I think... I'm going to start it off and host the club at my house on June 1 at 7 p.m. I'm guessing it will usually last 1 1/2 - 2 hours and refreshments will be served by the one hosting the club. Since the book I've chosen for this month is The Secret Life of Bees and since some of us read it many months ago (when I first said I'd start the book club) and since some people won't have time to read it before the club, we've decided to watch the movie!!! However, I have 3 extra books so if you'd like to give it a go, let me know!

We will come up with a list of names of those who would like to join and have you recommend a book and choose a month to host (the club will be held the 1st Tuesday of every month). Hopefully we can get 6 months to a year planned so you can all be prepared. We're open for suggestions and ideas on how to run the club. We'll also come up with some guidelines so that everyone is comfortable with the reading list and most of all, we'll have fun!

I don't want to give out personal information over the internet, so feel free to e-mail me at hey nonnie at yahoo dot com. And finally, a disclaimer: I did not copy Cabezon Book Club on purpose. It turns out they have the same blog background as me (books, go figure!) and our club names are ironically similar in that they're named after the wards most of us belong to, though it's not a ward sponsored activity. Oh, and I just took a look and it turns out they're doing a movie during the month of June too. Ah well, great minds think alike! Just don't tell them about us until I find another background that I like better.

Happy Reading! ~Dione

P.S. If you'd like to follow this blog or make comments you will need to create an account with Google. It's really easy and you don't have to have your own blog in order to do so. Just click on the follow this blog link on the sidebar and follow the prompts! (I think)

The Secret Life of Bees - Sue Monk Kidd

The book for June is The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (isbn13: 9780142001745)

It will be held on June 1st, 7p.m. at Dione's house. We will be watching the movie so bring lots of tissues!

Description: Living on a peach farm in South Carolina with her harsh, unyielding father, Lily Owens has shaped her entire life around one devastating, blurred memory - the afternoon her mother was killed, when Lily was four. Since then, her only real companion has been the fierce-hearted, and sometimes just fierce, black woman Rosaleen, who acts as her "stand-in mother."

When Rosaleen insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily knows it's time to spring them both free. They take off in the only direction Lily can think of, toward a town called Tiburon, South Carolina - a name she found on the back of a picture amid the few possessions left by her mother.

There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters named May, June, and August. Lily thinks of them as the calendar sisters and enters their mesmerizing secret world of bees and honey, and of the Black Madonna who presides over this household of strong, wise women. Maternal loss and betrayal, guilt and forgiveness entwine in a story that leads Lily to the single thing her heart longs for most.
